a memorial day televised ceremony
of the last generation to have fought
in an un-televised war
four score and four years and older
frail souls immersed in visions
of an invincible Pearl Harbor Armada
and eager young sailor boys exploding
memories that seldom sleep
under their sagging skins
cause the rain to fall
from their bony salutes
they are solemn and weary
proud and disheartened
their love of country
a badge and a burden
to take to their graves.
In the distance a solo trumpet wails.
